Finalist - Gallipoli Memorial Art Prize
Sydney NSW
Under the cover of darkness; over 11 nights, 90,000 troops were quietly and efficiently evacuated from Anzac Cove and the Suvla Bay beaches. I wanted to paint the sombre mood of our troops leaving, and their sad farewell to their fallen mates. Leaving their friends was their deepest regret. Just before dawn (4am) the last party departed Gallipoli - it must have been a quiet, dark and still time. No words were spoken; only silent thoughts and heavy hearts. Thoughts of: being glad to go but not wanting to leave their mates, - the mates who they had fought for and who fought for them. Heroes of strength, courage and bravery.
The ships are waiting to carry them away from here, and with them the enduring spirit of the Anzacs.
"Is thus to leave you, thus to part Comrades, farewell" (CQMS A Guppy, 14th Battalion)
